Secret Millionaire

The big story around here this morning is the $30-million lottery winner who waited almost a year before claiming his prize, saying he “didn’t want to do anything rash.” Now while most of the media seem baffled by this guy, I can totally understand. Wouldn’t it be cool to be a secret millionaire? Just to know and keep it to yourself, and see how people treated you, before the big news got out and everyone wanted to be your friend?

I think Raymond Sobeski is a smart man. He’s had almost a year to figure out who his true friends are, so that when people around him start cozying up to the millionaire, he can just smile to himself. Enjoy your winnings, Raymond!

  1. I think he’s an idiot. Didn’t want to do anything rash? Then take the money, stick it in an index fund, and donate the gains to your favorite charity. That’d feel a lot better than being a “secret millionaire” for a year, I would think.

Can you tell I’m the son of an accountant? 😉

  2. Weird. Raymond is lucky that he didn’t get hit by the bus, catch SARS, or lose the ticket. And I have to go with dansays, that he’s lost a lot of money by waiting a year. Interesting story.

  3. If you won 30 million, you’d be worried about losing some interest? Keep in mind that the lottery corporation in Ontario is a charity, and the interest would have been used in that regard, I would imagine.

  4. This has nothing to do with whether he’s smart or stupid — he has 2 ex-wives that he’s trying to exclude from the winnings; the delay was to finalize divorce proceedings.

  5. Abbbbsoluuuuuuuuuutellllleeeeeeeeeee Unbeellllllllllllllllllllllievvvvvvable!!!

Ray showed us where the bear shits in the woods didn’t he!!

    Call me – Lucky bastard

  6. The guy is a genius. He had separated from his wife in 2002. He waited until his divorce was final until he claimed the prize. He saved himself millions. This guy is my hero!
