The guy is a genius. He had separated from his wife in 2002. He waited until his divorce was final until he claimed the prize. He saved himself millions. This guy is my hero!

This has nothing to do with whether he’s smart or stupid — he has 2 ex-wives that he’s trying to exclude from the winnings; the delay was to finalize divorce proceedings.

If you won 30 million, you’d be worried about losing some interest? Keep in mind that the lottery corporation in Ontario is a charity, and the interest would have been used in that regard, I would imagine.

I think he’s an idiot. Didn’t want to do anything rash? Then take the money, stick it in an index fund, and donate the gains to your favorite charity. That’d feel a lot better than being a “secret millionaire” for a year, I would think.
