With our trip to Iceland just a few weeks away, I was delighted to discover Iceland Socks, a promotional site for the Iceland Express airline. They’re already a pretty hip company, with a great blog featuring lots of information on music and other stuff, but Iceland Socks is pretty amazing. The site lets you quickly create your own travelogue movie, starring a pair of sock puppets you can name. You can add subtitled dialogue in up to three scenes. Lots of fun and a great way to get people to think about Iceland’s “other airline”.

Croatian design agency Bruketa & Zinic have created an annual report for the food company Podravka that features a book of recipes that has blank pages until the book is actually baked in an oven. The statement “In New York City, someone stole the penis of a chocolate Jesus” is not true; the source was a satire website that was mistakenly thought to be a genuine news source. Harper’s Weekly apologizes for the error.

Harper’s Weekly is an email with a bunch of odd news mixed in with more serious stuff. The fact that it’s usually pretty funny all on its own made this “retraction” even better.

By the way, Harper’s recently revealed an amazing new site with access to PDF scans of their entire 150 years of back issues, free for subscribers. After my complaints about the lack of a DVD archive, this is amazing news. No new, potentially obsolete hardware to buy, just a low rate of US$16.97 per year, and that gets me the printed magazine as well. Genius! Big ups to the brilliant Paul Ford, who’s behind the curtain.

In a bizarre case of art imitating life imitating art, or something, there is now actually a BAND called Consolation Champ! I wonder if they left off the “s” since they couldn’t get this domain name? Most of you know that the name of this site was one of a number of hypothetical band names I tossed around for most of the 80s and 90s, and so I’m actually sort of proud that there is now a bunch of guys out there (in Minneapolis, actually) who are making music under the (slightly-different) name. Rock on, guys and good luck! Go and check out their CD.

I realize that some of you poor typists might have already found this out, actually.

UPDATE: I just checked their MySpace page and it appears that they might be playing SXSW this year. WEIRD! If they are, I think I might just NEED to see them. So strange.

I clicked on a strange Google Ad today. Nice to see that Campus Crusade for Christ is using the World Cup as an evangelistic opportunity. Jesus And The World Cup is basically an evangelistic tract laid out in the green and gold of Brazil’s team colours. Is this a hint as to whom God favours?

Back in September, Brooke and I spent a week in Washington state and dropped into the Democratic Party headquarters in Walla Walla to express our support. The guys seemed eager to talk and we ended up spending about half an hour with them. We joked that if Bush won again, they should all come to Canada and claim refugee status.

Marry An American has a slightly different plan. They’re signing up single Canadians to marry liberal Americans so that they can escape Bush’s America. If I wasn’t already married, I might be willing to help out! That would certainly be bigamy (get it? bigamy, big of me? it’s funny!).

The “Your Name Here” Story

From the wonderful Open Video Project, a new source of bandwidth drain, comes The “Your Name Here” Story, the ultimate industrial film. This film was made in 1960 by and for attendees of the Calvin Workshops, an annual series of workshops held to help industrial filmmakers improve their work. Whether this film was meant to be seen in public or not, it shows that these guys clearly had an idea of how inane a lot of their work seemed, not just today, but even while they were creating it. The spoof industrial film in Spike Jonze’s Being John Malkovich owes a debt to the Calvin Workshops.

Also, don’t miss #Bfl O {ggGX = STwWcfl x 2s4 (1963), a look at the film-production process starring chimpanzees, and The Vicious Circle, or What Are We Trying To Do? (1964), about the joys of working with corporate clients.

I don’t think it’s a stretch to say that the industrial filmmakers of the 1950s and 1960s have a lot in common with today’s web designers. Watch and laugh and learn!

Trivia Note: The Calvin Workshops were sponsored by the Calvin Company, a leading producer of industrial (“nontheatrical”) films based in Kansas City. An early employee was Robert Altman.

If you grew up in Canada in the 1960s or 1970s, you will know what I’m talking about. For those who didn’t, Hinterland Who’s Who was a series of one-minute films shown on television between commercials. If I remember right, sometimes we even saw them at school. They were brief introductions to some of Canada’s wildlife species, delivered by a very boring narrator. I’m sure almost every Canadian comedian has spoofed them at some point in his/her life. Well, not only is the Canadian Wildlife Service going to produce new clips, but it’s put up a great web site containing all of the old ones. Those first few notes on the flute always take me back to the days when I thought I’d see ptarmigans and snowy owls and roseate terns just outside my window.

There’s a great page about Oliver Stone’s film and how he (and by extension, Jim Garrison) distorted the facts. Very well researched. Sorry about the whining yesterday. I’ll try not to let it happen again.

In other news, how about that election? It’s still not decided as I write this, as they’re going to do a recount in Florida. Yes, folks, those Nader votes may just have been crucial. And you, yes you, your vote is probably the key to the whole enchilada. And on your birthday, too.

This week’s New Yorker is excellent. In addition to the excellent article on blogging (well, mostly about Meg and Jason’s romance, but it filled in a lot of details for me), there’s an article on fibromyalgia, good Caterina’s affliction. To top it off, it’s the Cartoon Issue.
