Interesting thoughts – I agree that the work environment often encourages us to hide behind the screen instead of getting out there, especially for those of us with introvert tendencies.

Sorry I am going to miss seeing you next week @ SXSWi – you will be one of the folks I miss the most. Have a great time and save up some good stories for those of us who won’t make it this year! (Also, eat some BBQ for me, ok?)

Thanks, Lee! I’ll definitely make the effort to get to some Patio Fridays. But these sort of after-work things have gone on for centuries. I’m hoping to change the nature of our workplaces so that all the best ideas aren’t the ones we scatter after a few drinks and then never get the chance to implement.

For those fans of “Dance of the Broken Heart,” by John and Patti Thompson, I must sadly inform you that their marriage apparently did not stand the test of time. I felt such a kinship to their story and was hoping their re-marriage turned out better than my own. I wish I had better news. In this article I found John Thompson now lives in Delaware and has remarried again to a woman he met on Match.com. They only knew each other for 5 months before getting married. Well said. It reminds me of my departure from last big corporate job… my heart left it long before I put in my notice. At the end of the day, if you’re going to be spending many hours immersed in a task it needs to be one you feel good about. With your unique mix of experience and skills you’ll find something better in no time.

Also, I’m glad to hear I’m not the only one who isn’t fully convinced about this whole “social media” thing. I like keeping in touch with friends on Facebook but my brief experience with Twitter was a downer, with dozens of people I didn’t know instantly “following” me in an effort to get me to go to their website and support their business and or cause. Pointless. Marketers trying to “capitalize” on social media will end up killing it.

Cate, thanks so much for your comment. It was surprising to me to realize that someone might want to comment on something that I wrote four years ago! Looking back on this entry, you're absolutely right, of course. I wrote this in post-concert frustration and didn't think through all your well-reasoned points. That tends to happen when we are angry. So I apologize. From four years on, I can grant that I didn't know much about this woman other than that she was being rude.

I am happy that you see South Africa changing and becoming more colour blind. I know for a fact though that there is very much more work to do. I recently saw Kim Longinotto's documentary "Rough Aunties" which follows a group of women who are trying desperately to care for the many abused children in SA.

I am not a South African, but I do continue to have an interest in the country. I sincerely hope that the future is as bright as you say. I have my own doubts, but that doesn't mean I want to see failure. I wish you well and hope that you can forgive my outburst. Thanks again for taking the time to set out your thoughts.

How incredibly galling that an outsider to our country and our culture could comment in this way. I was relieved to realise this was written by a "North American" known worldwide for their smug and insular world views. South Africa has a truly remarkable culture and its changing landscape has a place for every citizen with an open heart.

It's wonderful and miraculous that this Afrikaans woman felt that the music of the Soweto Gospel Choir was hers... and it is! How far we have come, how proud we should be that our cultures are blending and that we can now share appreciation for the many wonders our country has to offer.

What would you say about the many "black" South Africans who so enthusiastically follow Western (and previously "Afrikaans") South African traditions like Rugby and Braaivleis - are they desperate to fit in too? Isn't it possible that we can all appreciate good things?

Only from the inside as a South African is it possible to understand the magic melting pot of our country and it's people. Every day we live a miracle as we grow in understanding, tolerance and love. The mixture is electric and our sense of humour crosses so many barriers. There are so many little things that are uniquely South African, that only we can truly appreciate. This appreciation is something South Africans share across all races, like a secret language. We all feel a joyful pride and enthusiasm for everything that belongs to us as a nation.

Apart from anything else, how can you be so sure of the previous political views of this woman you have disdanefully branded "Afrikaans" with as much predjudice as others in another era might have branded her countrymen with darker skins something far worse. Many Afrikaaners fought in the struggle and were imprisoned during the apartheid era for their views. My own parents (not Afrikaans) served time for being members of various left wing groups and we grew up in foster homes with police guards. We claim our right to live here now and celebrate our country's growth and change. We love our country and pray for it's continued growth.

While we may have a long way to go to full reconciliation we are a nation working very hard to bring love and acceptance to each other, trying to bridge gaps and mend a society torn apart by previous atrocities. Who are you to judge the joyful acceptance of this change by one of our people? South African are truly remarkable and even in the midst of our struggles with poverty and violence we stand together every day in small ways to make magic.

Watching our children grow together is so rewarding. More and more we see the next generation grow truly colour blind, it's wonderful. Even the workplace is now full of bright and well educated young people who bring such a warmth and energy to our stuffy corporations, young people who would have been disadvantaged not so long ago.

Don't think that a few meetings with some of our statesmen, some business connections and a keen interest in our politics is enough to make you one of us - enough to give you any understanding of who we are or what is right for us.

While the woman you despise may have been lacking in some manners - to drown out a performance in a theatre is rude... condemn her only for her thoughtlessness - not her enthusiasm, innocent enjoyment or her valiant efforts to throw herself into a new era... with a smile.

Lonnie Frisbee's story has a sad ending, but as he himself admitted, homosexuality is a sin. Just as adultry cannot be excepted in the Church, neither can homosexuality. I don't think that means he will burn in hell, but he could not continue that lifestyle and also continue to be a Church leader.

Kristoffer Ragnstam is some more great Swedish-pop in the Jens Lekman or Suburban Kids vein. Erin Bode and Hi-Fly are both jazz albums, and Creature is an awesome dance band from Montreal. If they ever make an appearance in Toronto I'm there!

It's sad that what the Lord did in a small group called Calvary Chapel over 30 years ago, he couldn't do now, as Lonnie and those like him not only would not be permitted to speak or minister in the church but would be promptly escorted out. We have traded the Holy Spirit for comfort and familiarity, we have become Father Son and Holy Scripture. Calvary Chapels sadly are now ruled by nepotism, Simony, and who you know, and by “who you know” I don't mean “Jesus”, every pastor now has to be connected by blood, or by an old network of familiar faces, an old boys network. In one particular case a young Calvary Chapel pastor is married to another mega church's pastor's daughter, so he is given a senior pastoret in an established smaller Calvary Chapel, and the previous pastor comes to the mega church where he is now allowed from time to time and in the absence of the Senior pastor to preach to the thousands that attend this mega church, a small price to pay… it has become an employment agency for the extended family….It has been said, “it seems that every move of God begins with one man, and then it becomes a movement and finally a monument,” well even though they try to wipe him out and erase him from memory, for better or worse “that man” was Lonnie Frisbee, and then the movement that God used him to beget becomes a monument….Calvary Chapel and the Vineyard's revisionist history is very different than how the Bible portrays the men God used in the Bible, men who were frail, faulted and struggling with sin, but we enjoyed their gifts, we used their calling and were amazed at their anointing, and when we got what we wanted a movement with thousands of churches then we threw them away, threw away the spark, the catalyst, and the man God used into the darkness. Men like Lonnie Frisbee come into our midst very seldom, maybe once in a lifetime to bring a fresh touch from God! and yet who was there for Lonnie when he needed help and understanding, who was there to lift him up rather than condemn him, “for when you do it to the least of these, you've done it unto me!” Calvary Chapel, Chuck Smith, Gregg Laurie, shame on you….and thank God for the man that God used, because of Jesus working through that man you are where you are today!

It is possible (if you can afford one), to buy a cell phone jammer over the internet. They are real, they work, and the more you spend the more range it has. You,ll have to do a little researcc to find onr, but they are a real hoot to have. Just follow some people around the local grocery to find a victim. I laughed my butt off. Just be sure you're not interrupting an emergency.

totally agree man, couldnt agree more. im never on my cell phone for a reason, they are stupid and i only, and i mean ONLY, use it when there is a big emergancy. but thats it. if i want to talk to someone, i'll either invite them over or call them on my house phone when i get home, and even then i make it short and sweet. cell phones suck.

Congrat's on the change. I did some client work for a large organization about 6 months back and I completely understand the frustration. It seems that to get anything approved, it has to go through 30 sign-off's. Community relations is exciting– it's a relatively new position in our field and what's most exciting, I think, is that it offers the opportunity to change the world!

Dill – There appears to be a copy of Exaltation now available on file sharing sites. It appears to be a digitized version of the cassette even though it is in flac format. It does sound nice. I don’t know if it is ‘everything’ – the cd (available now on ebay for $80! No way.) says 2 albums on one cd, so there may be more music on that. Hope this helps someone.

This blog is actually part of a much larger project called the Academy of the Recent Past (http://www.academyoftherecentpast.com/) who collect material and put out books of the stuff. The other blogs look pretty funny as well (stuff about 80s music, summer camp, bar mitzvahs, etc.).

I'm still on the fence regarding "user-generated content" though. How do other people feel about this sort of thing? A company gathering all this material together through the internet and then publishing it for a profit? I don't know what the terms are for this specific company. Maybe they do pay their contributors. But this new business model seems to be popping up everywhere, powered by the incredibly easy group-forming abilities of the internet (a phrase I have borrowed from Clay Shirky's latest book, Here Comes Everybody). Is it legal? Sure. Is it ethical? Well, probably. But there still seems something slightly skeevy about it.

I love your response to urban_mermaid. Such a big initial excitement rarely lasts and shouldn't be taken as a sign you should (or really want) to work somewhere.

Along with information interviews, I think getting to know employees on all levels of a company you're interested in working at helps. If you run into these people often and seem to get along well, chances are you'll fit in their space well and probably enjoy it!

I loved Dublin, when I visited there one Christmas. The moon, the snow, the tinkers horses loose and quietly walking through sparse trees and shadows. These animals seeking out morsels that may be buried under the cold, thick and fluffy white cushion we walked on. I had no idea if e walked upon a road or pavement or if I was crossing a grassy knoll that night. The walk there was better than the “do” I was attending.

I also smile when I remember morning tea and the small delivered bottles of fresh milk , theirsweet creme topper; wall furnaces, fireplaces and pots of tea . Double entry doors and settling into an easy chair in my stocking feet.

Pints in a crowded pub. Ireland pubs get crowds of potential friends. I thought the English pubs were filled more with people censoring their smiles and conversations. Ireland made me feel so very welcome, even in Belfast, amazingly open people of all ages, I am American, does that mater?.

There is so much one can do while in England, but I go to Ireland for the smiles and the magical snowy nights . A feeling you belong there even if your new.

Don’t get me started on how much I enjoyed France, lol Wow! Now THAT was different!

Late to your posting, but an interesting piece nontheless. Security's rare at any time, I've always found hope in the fact that everything's in cycles. Lousy if you're IN one (such as the recession when I first left university, or the dotcom burst), but they will eventually change. Not starving to death in the interim is a bit more of a challenge.

But there's hope, from one creative generalist to another. I have a screenwriting degree, worked as a game designer, technical writer, marketing writer (for software and for handmade soap), wrote Policy and Procedures for the government, wrote and answered RFPs for a consulting firm, wrote newsletter material and executive announcements for a bank and found my way to corporate commincations from a HR perspective at another bank. A weird trip. There's a through-line: being both general and communicative. Sometimes it works.

Hey thanks for the kind words and props James!

Sorry to disappoint you about the Windows OS, it's actually a huge part of our mandate-- to provide children with a computer that's similar to what they use in school. We could save the Foundation a lot of money by using Open Office and Linux, unfortunately, at present time, it might be a disservice to the child we're trying to help.

That being said, I bet a great case could be made for giving the little sponges a Linux equipped PC and how they might change the world one day. Baby steps.
