It is so interesting to read comments which are clearly gossip, but all done by loving Christians. This is why people are turned off by Christianity; they don't see Jesus in YOU. They only see gossips. And by the way Mel, what does then bible say about gossips? You might want to check that out because you will be on the receiving end of that one! You also might want to check out the life story of AA Allen ( written by his daughter). He didn't drink. Be thankful for the mercy of God that none of us deserve, and stop talking about people as if you know them personally. You wouldn't want to be gossiped about, so stop doing it to others! And money is not filthy- scripture tells us the love of money is evil. A lot of good has been done with money, and GOD speaks repeatedly about being blessed- He has obviously blessed many people, and my guess is that they are faithful tithers!

Sheesh!

And Terry, if Patti ever hugged you after your arrogant, self-important post, she would truly have a big heart.

Brian, here are Bruce's comments to me, dated March 17, 2003:

*You're onto something really interesting here.
*It's kind of like asking, why do we have a Supreme Court and a President, why don't we all just hang out at the World Social Forum in Brazil?
*Why do we have record companies and record stores. Wouldn't a P2P network with "borrowed" files do?
*Who needs librarians and Dewey Decimal? Can't we just Google it?
*Should I subscribe to magazines or newspapers or just check out blogdex and daypop every morning?
*Since I can't do much about amateur assassins in Al Qaeda, shouldn't I declare war on an organized government in Iraq?
*Instead of a poorly organized cluster of TCP/IP machines, shouldn't I sink all my money into WorldCom?
*What's with Windows? If I hang out long enough somebody will make a Linux desktop that almost kind of works. Isn't that good enough?
*How come the ratings of these movies are so middlebrow and my email is also full of spam targeted at gullible morons? is there some connection between these two phenomena?

Hi Terry ~

I must have been wonderful for your husband to be in the production of El Shaddai. I purchased a cassette tape when I was a new Christian in college and was so moved by the music. I have been looking for a copy of the musical on and off for the last fifteen years. Do you have any information as to how I might find one? Even the name of the record label may help. The closest I've come so far is a photo of the album but it was listed as "unavailable". Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

I'd like to say I was saved through Oral's Ministry, and when the divorce took place I stayed neutral and kept my peace.. I Honestly believe Patti told the truth, Even though I never read her book.. She was a very Beautiful woman.. Some times through life we take the wrong path, but if we are Faithful God will see us through.. I never agreed with Ministers living in thirty million dollar homes, and I don't see it in the Bible where God has condone such life styles. The Apostles lived by example... Paul chose to work and preach to win more souls to Christ.. Smith Wiggles Worth lived like an Apostle. Now I'm not these peoples Judge God is..
The Bible Say's in that time they will say," Have we not cast out devils in your name, healed the sick, raised the dead. Why did the Lord say that if these people didn't perform such tasks. I could go on and on with Scripture, But like I said, I'm not their Judge but God is.. Oh I still enjoy watching Richard, Benny, and others.. But I see some holding onto filthy Lucre and that's not pleasing to GOD.. AA Allen was an example, loved his alcohol.. And what does the Bible say about Drunkards? It Say's they can't enter the Kingdom of Heaven.. Like I said I'm not their Judge, and In no way am I saying these men will be lost, because I fear God's judgment to judge another man, so I'll leave that up to God, but I also know what the Scriptures Say.. We have to be Honest with our selves and with others, and we should never water down the word of God

Well thought out. I think more people need to reflect on themselves and the job/career they're in. Some do it, but others are not brave enough to get out or jump ship into a different area entirely. Keep at it, James. You will get there.

The fact is, nobody can truly know what happens in a marriage except the two people involved. Even if you do happen to know them, you still tend to see and/or tell things from your perspective. The best thing to do I think is pray for them. While I am sorry things didn't go better for them, it appears this all happened a long time ago and it's probably not productive to discuss it on a message board. Things don't always turn out the way you plan. I think it would be wise to get back to the original purpose of the site, to discuss music. Just my opinion.

Wow. Was just searching for info on "El Shaddai The Musical" and came across this site. Terry Vazquez, you should be ashamed of yourself. Since you are so quick to judge, I assume you are without sin? I happened to know both John and Patti very well (still do, in fact) and your assessment of them couldn't be further from the truth. There were some deeper and much more private issues going on that you will never know about so I urge to realize that things are not as they seem. I won't disparage anyone here, but I can say that things were VERY different from what your ignorant view states. Stop judging other people and try compassion next time.

Reading the essay "The New Boy Network" by Malcolm Gladwell in his latest collection, <em>What The Dog Saw</em> and just had to quote this bit:
<blockquote>"For most of us, hiring someone is essentially a romantic process, in which the job interview functions as a desexualized version of a date. We are looking for someone with whom we have a certain chemistry, even if the coupling that results ends in tears and the pursuer and the pursued turn out to have nothing in common. We want the unlimited promise of a love affair."</blockquote>
He's contrasting current HR practices with something called <strong>structured interviewing</strong> which he describes more like an arranged marriage, based on logic and practicality.

Funny how companies persist with the same practices that lead to mismatches. Perhaps every job should begin as a 6-month (or however long it might take to qualify for unemployment benefits, just to protect the employee) contract, with the option for either party to walk away after that with no hard feelings.

[...] Last year, I finally figured out how to use Garage Band to put together a sort of digital mix and I think it worked out pretty well. I think my CD-burning days are behind me, but I’m still excited to be revealing my 11th annual South by Southwest mix. You don’t need to be attending SXSW to download and enjoy this edition of Compilation Champs. But if you are, make sure you say hello if you see me. In any case, please let me know what you think about the songs. I love putting this together each year and writing a little bit about music, which I don’t do often enough. [...]

Tim, Listen from 32:00 to about 33:00 if you just want to hear what I said about you. Here's a precis: you were even shorter than I was, you had a great big head (!!), you were a "sweet guy", you and your brothers and sisters were all very bright and are probably all doing interesting things now.

D'oh, stream-of-consciousness rambling can be a little embarrassing.

Yikes! Well first of all it's fantastic that you found me. I've thought about you a lot over the years and wondered what you'd gotten up to. But now I'm feeling incredibly self-conscious about putting up my senile blatherings and hope you won't bother actually listening! I can't remember what I said specifically about you, but I'm hoping it won't come across poorly!

Funny thing about the connection to St. Mike's too. And doubly strange is that the week after I started working here, I found out I'll be working on some web pages connected to a research study led by Dr. Michael Cusimano, one of the Cusimano kids I had been reminiscing about in the podcast. I haven't met him yet, and am not sure he'd even remember me, but it felt a bit serendipitous.

So, where are you and what are you doing these days?

Slow day at work today as it is US thanksgiving, so I googled my name and it came up with a link to Consolation Champs that included a number of vaguely familiar names.

Didn't find the specific post with my name (it is all about me after all), but this looked like quite the walk around the old 'hood. I'll check out the podcast later. Hope you're well.

Best of luck with the new job - My dad used to work at St Mike's. Who doesn't like working downtown (if the commute is not too bad)...or the Talking Heads, for that matter.

Thanks everyone! Brad, the photos are already up on Flickr but are a bit disorganized at the moment. I'm hoping to spend some time tagging and labelling and organizing them soon, but you can at least see where we were (and what we ate!) now.

Happy birthday! On my forum, someone just started up a time capsule that I'm supposed to bring up in 25 years... they've got a lot of confidence. :p

Wow, vm, that made my day. That, and Spain winning the World Cup! Thanks, you're really too kind. I missed Spoon purposely because I saw them earlier at the Sound Academy, but not without a twinge of regret. It's the first time I've missed them playing in Toronto since 2001.

Toronto Screen Shots is the only source I trust on the subject of all things film. Maybe someday you can replace one (or both) of those madmen writing for the Globe.

PS- Hopefully you were able to catch Spoon at the Molson Amphitheatre?

Dude, well done. I remember back in 2001 when Dinah Sanders had one of your Compilation Champs mix CDs and I thought to myself "I don't want to meet this guy. He's going to be way too hip for me."

Who knew I'd learn so much from you? James, a continued and enduring pleasure.

I'm so happy to have found a place where I could learn something about Patti and John! We knew them 21 years' ago in New York City at Times Square Church (established by David Wilkerson in 1987) and she and John had been guests in our home and we in theirs (in New York). Patti and my husband both sang in the choir. At that time the Thompsons had started a music publishing company "Great Pearl" but I don't think it lasted too long - Patti asked me if I'd consider working there. (No way!) Patti's a sweetheart but John is, to put it gently, not exactly a very congenial guy. You said it, he's got issues! Anyway, the last time I spoke to Patti on the phone (in NY) she had just miscarried a baby. She and John had one child together, Canon Thompson and I have photos taken outside the church of the entire family (tho' I cut John's head off because he was so annoyed to have his picture taken). I told him he'd be happy to know I cut his head off and he said "good". We lost touch after they left NY, they moved around so much. About 3 years' ago we heard from a friend who was close to the Thompsons in NY at the time. He told us that they had divorced and that one of them had remarried. I was pretty shocked, not about the divorce, who could stay married to that grouch (John), but about the remarriage. I felt that it probably wouldn't be Patti but then Patti was John's THIRD wife and surely he wouldn't remarry- but now I find out he did. Wow. I do happen to have a fairly good sounding old tape of El Shaddai, the Musical, given to us by the Thompsons because my husband sang in the NYC production of El Shaddai along with 200 other people. Some were given the tapes as a thank you. I don't think I have the right to duplicate it or give it out. At the time, John was planning to make an album of it but that never got off the ground. Sorry to be so long winded but this is amazing to me, that after thirsting for some current information about Patti, I found this blog! If you, as "blog-writer", should care to receive the photos I refer to above of the Thompsons as well as Patti's two girls, if I'm satisfied that you won't publish them or give them to anyone, I might consider it. I just hope that through this somehow someone can add to this information. I'd love to hug Patti once again- she has a tender and loving heart.

I work at a software development company (as you know); I don't think it gets much more tech-centric than that. We socialize like monkeys. We ("engineers" aka programmers) have work from home two days a week to ensure we get enough work done.

Interesting thoughts - I agree that the work environment often encourages us to hide behind the screen instead of getting out there, especially for those of us with introvert tendencies.

Sorry I am going to miss seeing you next week @ SXSWi - you will be one of the folks I miss the most. Have a great time and save up some good stories for those of us who won't make it this year! (Also, eat some BBQ for me, ok?)

Thanks, Lee! I'll definitely make the effort to get to some Patio Fridays. But these sort of after-work things have gone on for centuries. I'm hoping to change the nature of our workplaces so that all the best ideas aren't the ones we scatter after a few drinks and then never get the chance to implement.

This is precisely what Patio Friday is for. Doesn't solve your in office dilemma, but it does give the opportunity to connect with #CanLIT type folks without the loud music <strike>and without all the booze</strike>. Well, it's a little less boozy. At any rate, good conversations about life and work in a casual setting.

Just a reminder to everyone that this is NOT Patti Thompson's web site. It's a blog that I write and I have NO connection to Patti Thompson. In fact, my entry doesn't even mention her. It's all of these comments that bring people here when they do a Google search. You're more than welcome to discuss Patti's music here, but I can't put you in touch with her or put you on her mailing list. Thanks!

That is a shame; I'm sorry things didn't turn out better for them. You just never know what life might throw at you, you can only do your best and trust God for the rest. And yes, we all do have our issues to deal with.

For those fans of "Dance of the Broken Heart," by John and Patti Thompson, I must sadly inform you that their marriage apparently did not stand the test of time. I felt such a kinship to their story and was hoping their re-marriage turned out better than my own. I wish I had better news. In this article I found John Thompson now lives in Delaware and has remarried again to a woman he met on Match.com. They only knew each other for 5 months before getting married. I guess he still has issues, but then, don't we all. You can use the link below to read the article:

Not really trying to advertise (so I won't post how to contact me yet) but I do still have an LP copy of Exaltation that is in excellent condition. Don't really know if anyone cares about LPs anymore, but obviously copies still exist. Sounds like the link above this message could then put it on cd.

Well said. It reminds me of my departure from last big corporate job... my heart left it long before I put in my notice. At the end of the day, if you're going to be spending many hours immersed in a task it needs to be one you feel good about. With your unique mix of experience and skills you'll find something better in no time.

Also, I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one who isn't fully convinced about this whole "social media" thing. I like keeping in touch with friends on Facebook but my brief experience with Twitter was a downer, with dozens of people I didn't know instantly "following" me in an effort to get me to go to their website and support their business and or cause. Pointless. Marketers trying to "capitalize" on social media will end up killing it.

I was trying to get in contact with Patti Roberts Thompson. My parents were friends with her years ago and my Dad was trying to get a hold of her. She had emailed us a couple of years back but we lost track of her address. Any info would be helpful.

Cate, thanks so much for your comment. It was surprising to me to realize that someone might want to comment on something that I wrote four years ago! Looking back on this entry, you're absolutely right, of course. I wrote this in post-concert frustration and didn't think through all your well-reasoned points. That tends to happen when we are angry. So I apologize. From four years on, I can grant that I didn't know much about this woman other than that she was being rude.<br><br>I am happy that you see South Africa changing and becoming more colour blind. I know for a fact though that there is very much more work to do. I recently saw Kim Longinotto's documentary "Rough Aunties" which follows a group of women who are trying desperately to care for the many abused children in SA. <br><br>I am not a South African, but I do continue to have an interest in the country. I sincerely hope that the future is as bright as you say. I have my own doubts, but that doesn't mean I want to see failure. I wish you well and hope that you can forgive my outburst. Thanks again for taking the time to set out your thoughts.

How incredibly galling that an outsider to our country and our culture could comment in this way. I was relieved to realise this was written by a "North American" known worldwide for their smug and insular world views. South Africa has a truly remarkable culture and its changing landscape has a place for every citizen with an open heart. <br><br>It's wonderful and miraculous that this Afrikaans woman felt that the music of the Soweto Gospel Choir was hers... and it is! How far we have come, how proud we should be that our cultures are blending and that we can now share appreciation for the many wonders our country has to offer. <br><br>What would you say about the many "black" South Africans who so enthusiastically follow Western (and previously "Afrikaans") South African traditions like Rugby and Braaivleis - are they desperate to fit in too? Isn't it possible that we can all appreciate good things?<br><br>Only from the inside as a South African is it possible to understand the magic melting pot of our country and it's people. Every day we live a miracle as we grow in understanding, tolerance and love. The mixture is electric and our sense of humour crosses so many barriers. There are so many little things that are uniquely South African, that only we can truly appreciate. This appreciation is something South Africans share across all races, like a secret language. We all feel a joyful pride and enthusiasm for everything that belongs to us as a nation.<br><br>Apart from anything else, how can you be so sure of the previous political views of this woman you have disdanefully branded "Afrikaans" with as much predjudice as others in another era might have branded her countrymen with darker skins something far worse. Many Afrikaaners fought in the struggle and were imprisoned during the apartheid era for their views. My own parents (not Afrikaans) served time for being members of various left wing groups and we grew up in foster homes with police guards. We claim our right to live here now and celebrate our country's growth and change. We love our country and pray for it's continued growth.<br><br>While we may have a long way to go to full reconciliation we are a nation working very hard to bring love and acceptance to each other, trying to bridge gaps and mend a society torn apart by previous atrocities. Who are you to judge the joyful acceptance of this change by one of our people? South African are truly remarkable and even in the midst of our struggles with poverty and violence we stand together every day in small ways to make magic.<br><br>Watching our children grow together is so rewarding. More and more we see the next generation grow truly colour blind, it's wonderful. Even the workplace is now full of bright and well educated young people who bring such a warmth and energy to our stuffy corporations, young people who would have been disadvantaged not so long ago.<br><br>Don't think that a few meetings with some of our statesmen, some business connections and a keen interest in our politics is enough to make you one of us - enough to give you any understanding of who we are or what is right for us.<br><br>While the woman you despise may have been lacking in some manners - to drown out a performance in a theatre is rude... condemn her only for her thoughtlessness - not her enthusiasm, innocent enjoyment or her valiant efforts to throw herself into a new era... with a smile.

How incredibly galling that an outsider to our country and our culture could comment in this way. I was relieved to realise this was written by a “North American” known worldwide for their smug and insular world views. South Africa has a truly remarkable culture and its changing landscape has a place for every citizen with an open heart.

It's wonderful and miraculous that this Afrikaans woman felt that the music of the Soweto Gospel Choir was hers… and it is! How far we have come, how proud we should be that our cultures are blending and that we can now share appreciation for the many wonders our country has to offer.

What would you say about the many “black” South Africans who so enthusiastically follow Western (and previously “Afrikaans”) South African traditions like Rugby and Braaivleis – are they desperate to fit in too? Isn't it possible that we can all appreciate good things?

Only from the inside as a South African is it possible to understand the magic melting pot of our country and it's people. Every day we live a miracle as we grow in understanding, tolerance and love. The mixture is electric and our sense of humour crosses so many barriers. There are so many little things that are uniquely South African, that only we can truly appreciate. This appreciation is something South Africans share across all races, like a secret language.
He certainly does shake people up. The theology of the Bible is that God created the world in 7 days. If one interprets that God evolved the world in 4 billion years, there is a big difference.

Lonnie Frisbee's story has a sad ending, but as he himself admitted, homosexuality is a sin. Just as adultry cannot be excepted in the Church, neither can homosexuality. I don't think that means he will burn in hell, but he could not continue that lifestyle and also continue to be a Church leader.

Maybe I should have added a few details for you...<br><br>Kristoffer Ragnstam is some more great Swedish-pop in the Jens Lekman or Suburban Kids vein. Erin Bode and Hi-Fly are both jazz albums, and Creature is an awesome dance band from Montreal. If they ever make an appearance in Toronto I'm there!

Thanks, Brooke, but have those old farts actually made any new music this year? Not to say I'd like it even then. :)<br><br>Note: Brooke is my wife. We talk like this to each other all the time. Sadly, she is not kidding, either. Her taste in music really is this bad.

It's sad that what the Lord did in a small group called Calvary Chapel over 30 years ago, he couldn't do now, as Lonnie and those like him not only would not be permitted to speak or minister in the church but would be promptly escorted out. We have traded the Holy Spirit for comfort and familiarity, we have become Father Son and Holy Scripture. Calvary Chapels sadly are now ruled by nepotism, Simony, and who you know, and by "who you know" I don't mean "Jesus", every pastor now has to be connected by blood, or by an old network of familiar faces, an old boys network. In one particular case a young Calvary Chapel pastor is married to another mega church's pastor's daughter, so he is given a senior pastoret in an established smaller Calvary Chapel, and the previous pastor comes to the mega church where he is now allowed from time to time and in the absence of the Senior pastor to preach to the thousands that attend this mega church, a small price to pay... it has become an employment agency for the extended family....It has been said, "it seems that every move of God begins with one man, and then it becomes a movement and finally a monument," well even though they try to wipe him out and erase him from memory, for better or worse "that man" was Lonnie Frisbee, and then the movement that God used him to beget becomes a monument....Calvary Chapel and the Vineyard's revisionist history is very different than how the Bible portrays the men God used in the Bible, men who were frail, faulted and struggling with sin, but we enjoyed their gifts, we used their calling and were amazed at their anointing, and when we got what we wanted a movement with thousands of churches then we threw them away, threw away the spark, the catalyst, and the man God used into the darkness. Men like Lonnie Frisbee come into our midst very seldom, maybe once in a lifetime to bring a fresh touch from God! and yet who was there for Lonnie when he needed help and understanding, who was there to lift him up rather than condemn him, "for when you do it to the least of these, you've done it unto me!" Calvary Chapel, Chuck Smith, Gregg Laurie, shame on you....and thank God for the man that God used, because of Jesus working through that man you are where you are today!

In one particular case a young Calvary Chapel pastor is married to another mega church's pastor's daughter, so he is given a senior pastoret in an established smaller Calvary Chapel, and the previous pastor comes to the mega church where he is now allowed from time to time and in the absence of the Senior pastor to preach to the thousands that attend this mega church, a small price to pay… it has become an employment agency for the extended family….It has been said, “it seems that every move of God begins with one man, and then it becomes a movement and finally a monument,” well even though they try to wipe him out and erase him from memory, for better or worse “that man” was Lonnie Frisbee, and then the movement that God used him to beget becomes a monument….Calvary Chapel and the Vineyard's revisionist history is very different than how the Bible portrays the men God used in the Bible, men who were frail, faulted and struggling with sin, but we enjoyed their gifts, we used their calling and were amazed at their anointing, and when we got what we wanted a movement with thousands of churches then we threw them away, threw away the spark, the catalyst, and the man God used into the darkness. Men like Lonnie Frisbee come into our midst very seldom, maybe once in a lifetime to bring a fresh touch from God! and yet who was there for Lonnie when he needed help and understanding, who was there to lift him up rather than condemn him, “for when you do it to the least of these, you've done it unto me!” Calvary Chapel, Chuck Smith, Gregg Laurie, shame on you….and thank God for the man that God used, because of Jesus working through that man you are where you are today!
