How does she do it?

I think we’re all too judgemental of Rebecca Eckler. She may not have a great deal of profound or philosophical contect in her writing, but that is not at all what her aim is as a columnist. Eckler writes Horacean satire that pokes fun at the absurdities of our “modern manners”, much in the way writers like Jane Austen, Kate Chopin and Dorothy Parker did before her. She is also highly entertaining at points in her pieces, and remarkedly succinct. And, unlike Leah McLaren, Eckler also never loses her focus in her articles; her articles always have a clear topic idea.
No, Rebecca Eckler may not be as political as Christie Blatchford and Margaret Wente, but we must keep in mind that she isn’t trying to be, either. Why don’t we take Eckler for what she is and realize that, whether we like her or not, she isn’t the stupid flake some dismiss her as? She’s a woman who knows exactly what her job description is and how to fulfill it well.
Please. Eckler’s not clever enough to write satire of any kind. Don’t insult the ghost of Dorothy Parker by invoking her name in the same sentence.
It’s not just that she’s not political. It’s that she writes navel-gazing, self-indulgent drivel that doesn’t tell the reader much about anything except Eckler’s vanity and sophomoric musings. As a reader, I couldn’t care less about Eckler’s weight obsessions or what she ate for lunch while interviewing somebody.
I’m completely disgusted that a national newspaper gives prime real estate to such a vapid writer. She’s an idiot.
I don’t believe Ms. Eckler is looking for approval from needy, self-proclaimed intellectuals. While some need the world to gush at their deep, highly intelligent views of life; others, simply confident in their own intelligence, without have to be affirmed by others, are able to take a humorous look at life. Ms. Eckler is one of these lovely creatures. Clever? Very. Vapid? Not at all. Exuding a confidence that does not require the approval of others? Absolutely. That may be exactly why some find her, and all like her threatening. She does not require the praise and reassurance that some do. Why? She knows who she is. Rebecca Eckler has the same ability to display a pseudo-genius take on everything that occurs in her life as all other columnists who write ego-stroking material do. BUT. But she doesn’t have to. She can write a lighthearted, self centered, immature, hysterically funny and brutally honest version of that truth. Why? Because sometimes there just isn’t anything to dig at. Sometimes it’s just right there in front of you. Rebecca: we need more just like you.
