Canada Loses Softball Game To “Greece”

Canada’s women’s softball team lost their game today 3-0 to Greece. Except that only one player of 15 on the team was actually born in Greece. And she’s a bench player. You see, the rules were massaged so that anyone with a grandparent born in Greece could compete for Greece. That’s why all these Californians with names like Farnworth, James, Gail, Kloezeman, and Czarnecki can call themselves Greeks. Pshaw. Am I the only one with a problem with this?

  1. All in the name of sportsmanship, right? Wrong…I think it’s a bit of a stretch! But it could be worse, they could all be on roids!

  2. Actually, 2 of the team members are native Greeks. Furthermore, this is first and foremost an opportunity to advance the sport in Greece. I’m sure if they win a medal it will be looked down upon, but this team winning games is nothing but good for the sport. And in fact, by Greek law, if one of your parents was born in Greece you are also an automatic Greek citizen (I was born in Illinois but I am a Greek citizen). So, yes this team may be together on a technicality but instead of begrudging te Greeks for winning a few games of softball, be thankful that the sport has some room to grow now in a country where it was previously completely unknown.
