Janji Joni

Janji Joni (Joni’s Promise) (Indonesia, director Joko Anwar): Thanks to excellent film site Twitch, I scored a couple of free passes to this Indonesian film, playing at the 10th annual Toronto Reel Asian International Film Festival. It’s the story of Joni, a film reel delivery guy, and his quest to deliver all of his reels on time and win the girl of his dreams. It’s a sweet and simple film, and the feature debut of its director, Joko Anwar. This is the first film I’ve ever seen from Indonesia, and it was certainly great to see what life in Jakarta is like, as well as hear some of the many Indonesian rock bands on the soundtrack, but the film still felt a little too cute to me. The leads are very attractive, but the humour is extremely broad, not unlike what you’d see in most Bollywood fare, and the characters are paper thin. Technically, the director has done a lot with what must have been a miniscule budget, and he pays tribute to film fans, as well as many of his favourite directors. In fact, the film tries very hard to be an Indonesian “Run Lola Run” but without the dark side of that film. In the end, it was entertaining but simple.

Perhaps it wasn’t fair that I’d just seen the new Bond film Casino Royale the night before. With surely less than 1% of that film’s budget, I’d say Anwar has done pretty well. And I’m glad to have gotten a glimpse into life in another place.

Geez Louise

Geez, Issue 3

I haven’t mentioned Geez yet, have I? Editor Will Braun (a former editor of Adbusters) is doing some cool stuff out there in Winnipeg, and I want people to know.

In a recent article for Rabble.ca, he talks about fighting the rising influence of the Religious Right (yes, even here in “liberal” Canada) by focussing on Jesus’ message of forgiveness and reconciliation.

“Perhaps religion, at its seldom-seen best, should allow society to imagine the unimaginable — like responding to evil with goodness and forgiving murders. Maybe the power of such actions can do more for our world than the super-power of religio-political might.”

Geez is a new magazine that’s hard to pin down, in a good way. It’s written from a Christian perspective, but so far, it’s tended to focus mostly on issues of sustainable living, simplicity, environmental and economic issues. I’ve subscribed and look forward to seeing where it takes me.

Toronto After Dark Film Festival

Toronto After Dark Film Festival

Yeah, I know. I should be completely film festivaled out by now, but this one looks interesting. The Toronto After Dark Film Festival features sci-fi, horror and fantasy films with a strong dose of Asian cinema. It runs from October 20-24, and I’ll miss the weekend section, but I’m definitely trying to get to the Monday screenings at the Bloor Cinema:

I’m bummed to miss the opening night film, Special, starring two of my favourite character actors. Michael Rapaport in a rare leading role, and Jack Kehler. Check out the trailer. Just the fact that the music in the trailer is “Popcorn” by Hot Butter makes me want to see it. But it looks equally funny and sad. Apparently there’s some problem with the film getting North American distribution, too, so this might be a rare opportunity to see it.

Taking It SLO

Beautiful Slovenia
Beautiful Slovenia (images copyright Boštjan Burger)

Brooke and I are off on a well-deserved break. We’ll be spending ten days in Slovenia. I’ll try to post some photos and maybe even some travelogue type stuff but no promises. In the meantime, enjoy the gorgeous photos of Boštjan Burger, who maintains an amazing repository of photos and VR panoramas that cover the entire country. If you hit refresh, you should see a different picture above each time.

We’re going to be staying in a wide variety of accomodations, including a former jail, a castle, an ultra-modern “boutique” hotel, a gourmet restaurant, and a working winery. Slovenia is a tiny country which encompasses both the Alps and the Mediterranean, so it will be like seeing all of Europe in ten days.
